Winter and Christmas

Yes, it's that time of year where the lawn furniture has been put away at all our homes in the Northeast and the snow shovels are placed by the door at the ready for our first snow storm of the season. The bird feeders are full and we have noticed squirrels have been busy storing their food the winter. We had our first dusting of snow last Friday which set the scene for the second weekend of Prelude. It's such a peaceful time of the year!

Christmas Prelude has come and gone once again this year. 2006 marked the 25th anniversary of Prelude and ushered in a new Prelude event, the first 'hat parade'. We saw over 300 entrants march down to Dock Square with their regalia and the winner donned a moose hat. One of our guests participated as he's been wearing his hat over the past three years...without the parade! Why not make it part of your plans for next year, book your room now.

Holidays are the perfect time for family and friends. Many will be traveling to see their loved ones. This year both Christmas and New Years fall on a Monday making for a three day weekend for most. Hopefully we'll all have the time to enjoy the full meaning of Christmas and share the spirit of the season.

Sue and I wish all our guests and future guests a Happy and Holy Holiday Season!

Where is Jolly Ole Saint Nick?

Where is Jolly Ole Saint Nick? Well that can be answered in many ways depending on what you believe and where you live. One things for sure, Saint Nick, Santa as we know him, will be arriving this very Sunday afternoon in Kennebunkport. What's that you say, there's no snow for Santa and his reindeer led sleigh to land on? For those who live along the Coast of Maine, Santa arrives by lobster boat. That's right you heard it correctly....Santa arrives by lobster boat, and on the first weekend of Prelude.
Christmas Prelude has been a long lived tradition here in the Kennebunk's celebrating it's 25th year. It's gown in popularity year after year and people come from far and wide to help usher in the Holiday Season. The Friday night kick off is a tree lighting ceremony along with caroling in the heart of Dock Square. One can find many things to do from pancake breakfasts, lobster dinners, chowda luncheon to church and craft fairs. All the shops offer tasty tidbits to munch, some offer hot cider. Saturday night culminates the days activities with caroling with the Franciscan Brothers along with a live manger. The fun doesn't stop there, it continues all week long and ends on the second Sunday of December.
Visitors can be seen wearing festive sweaters, lighted antlers and even sombreros rimmed with white lights. Many of our guests at the 1802 House Inn have been attending for many years and have made it a 'family tradition'.
Sue and I want to wish all our guests and frequent readers of our blog a Healthy and Happy Hoilday Season.

Portland Museam of Art

It's hard to believe that in this day and age something is for free. Yes, the Portland Museum of Art is open on Friday nights from 5 to 9 pm and is free for those who want to enjoy a wonderful evening in Portland. The museum's feature from November 2, 2006 through January 7, 2007 is called 'American ABC', Childhood in the 19th Century America. American ABC explores the subject of childhood and it's relationship to the American quest for national identity during the 19th century. They are presenting works by Winslow, Homer, Thomas Eakins, Eastman Johnson and other major American artists. After your visit to the museum one might want to have a leisurely dinner and enjoy shopping in the Old Port section of the city with it's cobblestone streets.

Honeymoon in Maine

Ah, a honeymoon in Maine! No matter what the season, Southern Maine, especially Kennebunkport, has plenty to offer. Late Spring, Summer and Fall offer a full multitude of seaside activities; long walks on miles of sandy beaches at sunset, whale watching, a lobster cruise, sailing aboard the Schooner Eleanor, shopping, live theater, bicycling, great restaurants, canoe and kayak rentals or simply siting back in a beach chairs watching the waves roll in. Fall brings a different scene to to the seaside; our population thins, apple picking, fall foliage, live theater and many county fairs provide cooler weather activities. Winter provides a great opportunity to sit back and relax in front of crackling fire, bathe in the warmth of your two person Jacuzzi tub, a stroll along an uncrowded beach on a bright sunny day or take a sleigh ride throught the fieilds of Rockin Horse Stables. What better way to start your new life together then with a Honeymoon at the 1802 House Inn in Kennebunkport, Maine!

Veteran's Day

Veteran's Day will be officially celebrated on November 11th and for many people, Friday the 10th will be a day off . We hope all of us will take the time to say 'thank you' to someone they might work with or know who is a member of one of our military branches, either active or reserve. We need to put our political views about the present war in Iraq behind us and focus on the fine men and women that serve our country so valiantly during these trying times. Their sacrafices from family, friends and loved ones should not go un noticed. Let's keep it a day of rememberence of those who serve and those who have served and not just 'another' day off. We at the 1802 House Inn commend our service men and women and will continue to offer special rates while they are home on military leave.

Fall Foliage

Fall is upon us once again here in the Northeast and the next couple of weeks will poroduce wonderful color as the leaves turn from green to vibrant yellows and reds. What a wonderful time expore the hills and valleys of Maine and beyond while spending a few days at the 1802 House Inn. Your return trip brings you through Portland and Cape Elizabeth to Portland Headlight. They all feature Maine made goods and foods for you to simply enjoy and possibly take home your Christmas presents while visiting Maine. Come, spend a night or two at our House!

Kenenbunkport Restaurants

Kennebunkport has some of the best restaurants in Southern Maine. Whether it's simple seafood or elegantly prepared meals, our guests at the 1820 House Inn are in for a culinary treat.

For those Rachael Ray officionados, she recently visited our area and had a segment on her show 'Tasty Travels' featuring Mabel's Lobster Claw Restaurant that aired in August. Mabels has been in business for many years and has been a favorite for residents and visitors alike throughout the season (Spring, Summer and Fall). Another mainstay open yearround is Alison's Restaurant offering casual dining and a sports bar for thsoe who want to get caught up on local and national sports action
We suggest either Windows on the Water, On the Marsh or Pier 77 for our guests who are looking for a 'special' dining expereince. All offer a sofisticated and diverse menu that changes seasonally to take advantge of the freshest ingredients. We strongly recommeded discussing your dining needs while booking since most restaurants fill rapidly on weekends in the fall. A special note to those cooks out there, Windows on the Water does monthly cooking classes and On the Marsh does seasonal cooking classes. We have attended and think it's a perfect way to spend an evening.

The Wayfarer in Cape Porpoise offers homestyle cooking at very moderate prices. Sue and I dined there this past Thursday and had one of their nightly specials, New England Pot Roast and it was simply delicious. They do not have a liquor license but will allow you to bring your own, and they supply the glasses and cork screw.

We hope this helps with your planning while visiting the 1802 House Inn and the Kennebunkport area.
